What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a form of counselling which uses a child’s language. Play is the main form of communication for children. It is a space when they practise and master skills, as well as gaining a sense of who they are and forming and developing an understanding of their relationship to others.

In therapy the child is given the space to play and explore the toys and materials we provide, building a safe relationship with their therapist. Their therapist will then gently hold the play and support the child however they are and with whatever they bring to enable change.

Play therapy has shown to support children to:

  • Feel more confident in expressing their thoughts and feelings

  • Develop their emotional vocabulary by accessing the language the Play Therapist relates to their experiences

  • Develop more socially appropriate behaviour

  • Improve their self-image and self-esteem

  • Improve concentration and organisation

  • Become more confident and creative in their play.
